WCHS Cheer Hawks Win Region Competition

Five months of arduous practice and five pre-region competitions paid off for the Washington County High School Cheer Hawks in November as they received the Region 3AAA Championship trophy at West Laurens. This makes the eighth time the Cheer Hawks have captured region. From 2000 to 2004, the Cheer Hawks reigned supreme; then again, in 2010 and 2011.

Coach Melissa Andrews said, “At many of our competitions, we face 3-time state champions Pierce County as well as South East Bulloch and Dodge County all of whom are our strongest competitors. All three squads have excellent programs with exceptional talent. Those competitions make us work harder and perform better.”

Each summer, the cheerleaders participate in stunt clinics, tumbling clinics, and choreography camp to learn their new routines. In July, seniors Dasia Danzy and Shelby Carter were named to the Top 40 Cheerleaders in the state.

“We are graduating 7 seniors and three of those are planning to cheer at a Division I college,” Coach Andrews said smiling. “Several of our athletes compete on All-Star Cheer Teams in the school’s off season. They work hard conditioning and practicing independently year round as many of our high school athletes do.”
