WCHS Senior Quintaveon Poole Signs With Mississippi State

For Washington County High School senior Quintaveon Poole, running is his passion.

"I was fast and wanted to use my speed," said Poole when asked what sparked his interest in track and field. Using his speed, he has excelled in the sport as he is currently ranked first in the nation in the 400 meter.

Seeing his potential, Mississippi State University recruited Poole and on November 12 he signed his letter of intent.

"Quintaveon is a very special athlete that possesses talent that is very rare. Most athletes are either a sprinter of a distance guy," explained Coach Gregory Cooper, adding, "He can do both--and finish at the top of his class which allows him to dominate the events he runs."

As a freshman, Poole advanced to state competition in the 1600 and 800 meter races. As a sophomore, he competed in the 800m and 400 m winning the 400m race. In addition to his national championship 400 meter run, Poole is a three-time First Team Region 3AAA track champion. In 2013, he was the 400m State Champion. For the 2014 season last spring, he was the 400m and 200m track state champion. He was named First Team All Region 3AAA cross country runner three times. He was the 2012 Region 3AAA Individual Runner-up Champion in cross country, and in 2013, he was the Region 3AAA Individual Champion in cross country.

With a nickname like "Bullet," Quintaveon knows he has to work every day to improve what he does on the track and in the classroom. Current Mississippi State 400m record holder Jamel Ashley said, "I first met Quintaveon one year ago; I'm honored to be here as a mentor for such a great athlete." Ashley is a 2005 graduate of West Laurens High School and said that Poole has already set a goal to break his {Ashley's} 400 meter record. Congratulations Quintaveon!
