Washington County Board of Education Receives Award of Distinction

The Washington County Board of Education recently received the Award of Distinction for Excellent Financial Reporting by the Georgia Department of Audits and Accounts. The award was established to recognize the better practices for financial reporting and controls. The award encourages local boards of education to go beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles and recognizes individual school districts that are successful in achieving that goal.

Sandra McMaster, Director of Finance & Business Operations, commented, “All of the members of the Finance Department worked very hard to achieve this honor.  Of the 180 school systems in the state, only 23 received this recognition.”  McMaster expressed appreciation to Dr. Hinton and the Board of Education for their support of the financial functions of the school system, remarking that the increasing pressures on school system funding have significantly increased the complexity of financial management and reporting.  She further commented, “To withstand the rigors of the annual state audit is a major task for the Finance Department, and to be among the recipients of this award by the Georgia Department of Audits and Accounts in its inaugural year is quite an accomplishment.”

The award of distinction was presented to organizations that submitted quality financial statements and supporting documentation in a timely manner, whose annual financial report was given an unmodified audit opinion and was free of any significant deficiencies or material weaknesses, and complied with all Transparency in Government requirements.

Those recognized by Kristina Turner, Deputy Director, Georgia Department of Audits and Accounts, at the June 5, 2014 Board of Education meeting include: Sandra McMaster, Director; Saketha Yancey, Payroll Manager (not pictured), Jasmine Williams, Accounting Manager; Vicki Frost, Purchasing Manager; Kayla Jackson, Grants Accounting Clerk (not pictured); Lisa Cabe, School Activity Accounting Clerk; Melissa West, WCHS Bookkeeper; Melissa Brown, TJ Elder Middle School Bookkeeper; Kim Anderson, Ridge Road Elementary Bookkeeper (not pictured); Donna Smith, Ridge Road Primary Bookkeeper; and Orlanda Jackson, School Nutrition Bookkeeper (not pictured).
