Going Screen-Free: Put Down that Screen and Walk Away

Does anyone else out there feel like there are just too many digital distractions in our lives today? Lately I’ve been feeling overwhelmed by the technology and how much it has taken over our lives, especially our leisure time. I’ve decided that I need screen diet! And lo and behold, May 5 -11 is Screen-Free week !

The idea of going completely screen-free for 7 days feels very daunting so I’ve decided to take the good-is-good enough approach (as opposed to doing it perfectly) and go on a screen diet for this week. Here are my personal rules:

  1. Limit checking email to twice a day.
  2. No Facebook (and other social media) except for work and limit the time spent for work.
  3. No TV except my exercise videos.
  4. Listening to music or reading a book on my device is ok, but as soon as I finish the book I am reading I am going to switch to a “real” book”.
  5. Texting is ok as long as it isn’t excessive.
  6. If I slip and go against any of my rules, I’ll give myself a break and move forward. It’s Day 1 and I’ve already slipped up but I’ve promised myself tomorrow will be better!

What I’m hoping to accomplish is to give my eyes and mind a break from the constant stimulation see what else I can get done and spend some more quality time with my family.  My 11 year old son is trying the screen diet as well, although as a video game lover, he’s already having a hard time resisting. My 13 year old daughter just said “Good luck with that” and rolled her eyes when I asked her if she wanted to join us. Oh, well, I tried.

So who wants to join in? Even if it is just for an hour, a day or a couple of days, let’s disconnect and enjoy some screen-free time!  See you on May 12th!!
