Washington County January Unemployment Rate

Washington County January Unemployment Rate

Washington County's unemployment rate for January was 12 percent, the Georgia Department of Labor news release says.

That's compared to metro Macon's 9.9 percent unemployment rate for January.

But that's still less than a year ago, at 10.5 percent.

Sam Hall with the Georgia Department of Labor says the increases should not be cause for concern because seasonal workers leaving temporary holiday jobs play a major factor in the variation.

He says the important thing is the rate is lower than it was last year.

10th District Congressman Paul Broun Talks Top Issues

Some people in Central Georgia will have a new Congressman come November, as Georgia's 10th Congressional District will then include Washington, Johnson, Hancock, and Baldwin Counties.

Congressman Paul Broun, a Republican, currently holds the seat.

He visited Eyewitness News on Friday to talk about some of the big issues in Congress.

Broun shared his thoughts on the economy, jobs, cutting the corporate tax rate, and his Budget or Bust Act, which would require Congress to pass a budget before getting paid.

Advance Voting Starts for Georgia Presidential Primary

Polls opened Monday morning across the state to kick off the presidential primary election.

Voters will decide who they'll want to face President Barack Obama in the November general election.

Bibb County Elections Supervisor Elaine Carr said it seems that more and more people are taking advantage of voting early.

"The voters are beginning to gradually really tune in to advance voting and they're really picking up on it," said Carr. "The 2008 general election, 29,000 of our voters voted in here in this office."

Carr said their office and others across the state will be open through Friday, March 2, and for the first time this year, you can also vote early on a Saturday.

"It will be February 25; we'll be open 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. for any voters that can't get in here during the week and have trouble on election day going," said Carr.
