Tractor Supply has its Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting on Saturday, March 31 at 10 a.m.

WCHS Wins at National History Day Competition

WCHS Wins at National History Day Competition

Washington County High School history students from the 9th and 10th grade Honors Social Studies classes competed at Regional National History Day held at Georgia College. 

The following students placed and will go on to state competition: 

Individual Documentary Lar'Kara Betha received 1st place; Individual Exhibit Samuel McCaskill received 2nd place and Ben Doolittle received 3rd place; Group Exhibit Shelby Carter, Casey Ogden, and Cera Brown received 2nd place and Grace Layton and Bryce Sheppard received 1st Place. Honorable Mention was given to Bethany Severance for Historical Essay, Hannah Lacey, Ashlyn Bennett, and Tyler Sheppard for Group Documentary.

The overall theme for National History Day was Revolution, Reaction and Reform in History. Project titles were: Lar'Kara Betha--Sit-ins and Freedom Rides: Students in Action;

Turkey Season Opens Saturday

The turkey hunting season opens Saturday, March 24, a Georgia Department of Natural Resources news release says.

To go turkey hunting, you'll need a valid hunting license and big game license to legally hunt turkeys in Georgia. If you're on a Wildlife Management Area, you'll also need a WMA license. You can buy licenses online, at a retail license vendor or by phone at 1-800-366-2661.

If planning to hunt on private land, you'll need permission from the landowner first.

There is a limit to turkey hunting: only male turkeys can be hunted and the season bag limit is three turkeys per hunter.

Washington County School Makes State's Focus List

The Georgia Department of Education has released a list of 156 schools labeled "focus schools" under the new accountability system.

In Washington County, Ridge Road Elementary School made the focus list.

According to the Georgia Department of Education, focus schools are those with a graduation rate of less than sixty percent over the last two years or with large gaps between highest and lowest achieving subgroups of students.
